About Midsummer Night Swing:
Midsummer Night Swing kicked off the outdoor summer action on June 29 in Damrosch Park by debuting a brand new dance floor. Lindy Hoppers, salsa dancers along with dancers coming to dance the Hustle and bhangra, all had fun.
Hundreds of people came out to dance orto just watch at this wonderful New York City summer tradition. The opening nightBattle of the Bandsfeaturedthe George Gee Swing Orchestra versus the BillElliott Swing Orchestra. Narcotango, the Argentine electronic tango sensation,made its New York debut, along withNashville’s Time Jumpers (western swing), the New Orleans Moonshiners (hot jazz), andLa-33 (Columbian salsa.)
A Midsummer Night Swing first was Bhangra Night, contemporary South Asian dance music rooted in Punjabi folk dance with D.J. Rekha and brass band Red Baraat. Harlem Renaissance Orchestra closed the Swing season with its annual tribute to the great Illinois Jacquet, along with the Second Annual Ambassadors Prize dance contest, honoring pioneer Frankie Manning. L’Orchestre Septentrional, a big band from Haiti celebrating more than 60 years of experience,brought classic compas, and Joey Arias channeled Billie Holiday as a guest of JC Hopkins Biggish Band, joining downtown and theatre favorites Justin Bond and Lea DeLaria. Midsummer Night Swing ran from June 29 through July 17 in Damrosch Park.
