Join us on May 2, in advance of World Press Freedom Day, for a reception and panel discussion. We’ll explore the exciting future of media with leaders of youth media initiatives in Kazakhstan and Afghanistan. A new episode is produced each week and is translated from the original Russian into all five Central Asian languages (Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Uzbek, and Turkmen). Popularity of the program and its various online and social media components among young people has increased dramatically over the past year. Recent programs have covered how to protect computers and mobile phones from theft and ensure privacy online, and a school for tech whizzes in Tajikistan.
Dawn Stallard: Dawn Stallard is the Senior Program Officer for Internews in Afghanistan, which collaborated with local partners to create the Afghan Youth Voices Festival, aimed at providing multimedia skills to young people to express themselves. In 2011, 2,200 young people took part in Afghan Youth Festival activities, including the first-ever Afghan womenÂ’s group blog, cartoon and graffiti workshops, a music festival, and photography workshops and exhibitions.
Mark Frohardt: Mark Frohardt is the Executive Director of the Internews Center for Innovation & Learning. The Internews Center for Innovation & Learning experiments with, captures and shares innovative approaches to communication from around the world. The Center seeks to strike a balance between local expertise and global learning in order to develop a comprehensive approach to innovative information exchange. The Center has committed to capturing the technological discoveries of field offices to enrich the knowledge base of the international development community as a whole.
InternewsNext: Inspiring Young Voices is a celebration of the next generation of media. In 2012, as part of Internews’ 30th anniversary year, we will feature 30 Under 30, highlighting media initiatives in communities around the world, working with journalists, bloggers, developers and others under the age of 30 to address the information needs of their communities.
