Wars, murders, and other acts of violence will likely become more commonplace in coming decades as the effects of global warming cause tempers to flare worldwide, a comprehensive new study warns.
The research, detailed in this week's issue of the journal Science, synthesizes findings scattered across diverse fields ranging from archaeology to economics to paint a clearer picture of how global warming-related shifts in temperature and rainfall could fuel acts of aggression.
Though scientists don't know exactly why global warming increases violence, the findings suggest that it's another major fallout of human-made climate change, in addition to rising sea levels and increased heat waves.
"This study shows that the value of reducing [greenhouse gas] emissions is actually higher than … [Continue reading...]

There was a lady named Helen who had dementia. Every time her daughter, Heidi, visited Helen showed no sign of recognizing her daughter.
Heidi was heartbroken. Time after time it was the same. She’d visit and get no sign of recognition whatsoever, so finally she made the painful decision to stop visiting.
It only upset her and she believed her mother felt no pleasure during her visits.

Dear SeniorNet Friends:
My family and I are touched by the decision to create the Eric Vero Technical Award in Eric’s honor. This year’s nominee was Ed Kristol, a volunteer who worked with Eric almost from the start of SeniorNet and contributed many hours of his time and energy both in the lab and at the nationalGrid hub. Together they worked with a team of dedicated individuals starting as early as 2001 until the end of the project in 2010. To paraphrase Ed Kristol, here is his response to receiving the award:
“Slava: I really do appreciate the honor. I also appreciate the years Eric and I and the others spent at KeySpan. I learned so much from Eric and the other volunteers that I still use. Again, thank you for the recommendation, this is an honor.”
Please join us in … [Continue reading...]
Passing it on...
Sitting on the highway waiting to catch speeders, a state police officer saw a car puttering along at 22 M.P.H. He thinks to himself, that car is just as dangerous as a speeder. So, he turns his lights on and pulls the car over. Approaching the car, he notices there are 5 old ladies, two at the front and 3 at the back, wide eyed and looking like ghosts. The driver obviously confused said, "Officer, I don't understand, I wasn't doing over the speed limit!, What seems to be the problem?" "Ma'am," the officer said, "you should know that driving slower than the speed limit can also be dangerous". "Slower than the speed limit? NO SIR! I was doing exactly 22 miles an hour", the old woman said proudly. The officer containing a chuckle explains that 22 was the route number, not … [Continue reading...]
Due to the efforts and support of so many - including you - 2013 has been a banner year so far for the MPCCF. Our events have been plentiful (see below) and the support generous. The community came out in force to support the Foundation, and had a lot of fun - we hope - in the process. Local children even got in on the fundraising action this year - their sales of Rainbow Loom Bracelets raised almost $400 for the MPCCF.
Now that the temperatures have cooled and the crowds around town have diminished, we'd like to take a moment to extend our special thanks to you, and everyone involved - from our many sponsors and donors to the tireless efforts of our volunteers and everyone behind the scenes - we couldn't have done it without you!
We hope that you enjoy the quieter months in … [Continue reading...]

Today’s automotive technology goes far beyond advanced navigation systems and improved airbags. New features such as smart headlights, blind spot warning and reverse monitoring systems are revolutionizing the way we drive. And the latest high-tech options are not only for the gadget obsessed – they have the potential to positively impact drivers ages 50+.
In fact, a new study from the MIT AgeLab found that while just over one third of mature drivers have at least one top technology, 51% said they would feel safer if their vehicle had all of the most up-to-date technologies. The survey also found that 55% of mature drivers plan to buy or lease another vehicle in the next five years, suggesting that as more and more of these features are incorporated into new vehicles, a growing … [Continue reading...]

I can hit the golf ball any way I can and laugh if it goes in the lake. Them's the breaks. I'm just happy I can still hit that golf ball. As I've aged, I've become kinder to myself, and less critical of myself. I've become my own friend. I have seen too many dear friends leave this world, too soon; before they understood the great freedom that comes with aging. Whose business is it, if I choose to read, or play, on the computer, until 4 AM, or sleep until noon? I will dance with myself to those wonderful tunes of the 50, 60 & 70's, and if I, at the same time, wish to weep over a … [Continue reading...]
