Water as vital to national security as defense, U.N. says By Environment Correspondent Alister Doyle

May 3, 2013 By admin Leave a Comment
water

Stresses on water supplies aggravated by climate change are likely to cause more conflicts and water should be considered as vital to national security as defense, the United Nations report said on Friday. About 145 nations share river basins with their neighbors and need to promote cooperation over a resource likely to be disrupted by more frequent floods and heatwaves, it said. "In the past few decades, definitions of security have moved beyond a limited focus on military risks and conflicts," Michel Jarraud, chair of U.N. work on water and head of the World Meteorological Organization, said in the report. About 185,000 Somalis fled to neighboring nations in 2011, driven largely by water and food shortages linked to drought, while in South Sudan, entire communities were forced … [Continue reading...]

That moment in water history was the beginning of over six years of the actual formation of WWRF into a popular non-profit foundation. WWRF worked to select exceptionally well qualified volunteer directors, officers and advisory board members. WWRF developed and is very proud to publish our website as a comprehensive one-stop source for research of any and … [Continue reading...]

Councilman Gennaro Hails Passage of Groundbreaking ‘Green’ Legislation

March 4, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

Bills make renewable energy options more accessible, reduce flooding of low-lying areas from major storms and preserve biodiversity in city parks. Councilman James F. Gennaro (D-Fresh Meadows) applauded the passage last week of three critical pieces of legislation that bring the city closer to the goals outlined in Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s landmark PlaNYC – including a bill that would help prevent flooding from significant rain events such as Hurricane Sandy by requiring city plantings to be storm water resistant. Runoff from heavy rain events like Superstorm Sandy cause Combined Sewage Overflows (CSOs) to discharge over 27 billion gallons of polluted rainwater and sewage every year into bodies of water throughout New York City. Intro 75-A, authored by Gennaro, would require … [Continue reading...]

World’s Largest Community Solar Project

January 17, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

Dear Friends, Hurricane Sandy has passed and the election is over. Many strong progressives were elected in the House and Senate, and Jay Inslee takes over as Governor of Washington. Climate deniers were defeated. Here's our summary. And to the surprise of many, big money lost, and that's important for renewable energy. Although the Michigan referendum failed to raise the state's RPS and the GMO labeling initiative was defeated in California, that state passed a measure that will fund renewable energy, and two states passed initiatives to overturn Citizens United. This week's Greentech Spotlight is "Gas Up With CO2." Researchers capture CO2 from the atmosphere and turn it directly into transportation fuel. I believe carbon capture will be an enormously important industry - we … [Continue reading...]

Happy 40th Birthday Clean Water Act!

January 2, 2013 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

The United States will celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act this Thursday, October 18, 2012. The Clean Water Act of 1972 is perhaps the most important piece of environmental legislation ever passed. Many people never knew or do not remember what state our waterways were in 40 years ago. Prior to the passage of the Clean Water Act, untreated sewage, industrial and toxic discharges, destruction of wetlands and contaminated runoff were serious problems in the majority of our country’s waterways. The Clean Water Act celebrates immense success on its 40th Anniversary! How has the Clean Water Act affected you? Read my article for Sally Bethea's piece on how the CWA was a major victory for the Chattahoochee, stories from AmericanRivers on what the CWA means to their staff, … [Continue reading...]

Hurricane Sandy‏ – Here Are Some Ways To Help

November 2, 2012 By David Katzmire Leave a Comment

Dear Paul, We are based in downtown Manhattan and our studio, which is right on the Hudson River, got badly flooded. As soon as the nine feet of water is completely pumped out of the basement, we will know how severe the damage is. The good news is that everyone is fine. We are without power and Kirschenbaum Productions forges ahead, each of us working remotely until we can regroup in one space. We have also hit the streets to capture some people's stories which we will be bringing to you soon.  So many people have suffered tremendously losing their homes, irreplaceable possessions and even loved ones.  The devastation that Hurricane Sandy has caused is overwhelming. It will take time, lots of help and money to recover from its aftermath.  New Yorkers are resilient. I was here just … [Continue reading...]
