Tomorrow, we will have a short observation of UN World Peace Day.
Please discuss the following with your students during 4th period for 10 – 15 minutes.
We will observe a moment of silence at 11:18am.
There will be an announcement to begin and end the moment of silence.
The International Day of Peace (“Peace Day”) is observed around the world on September 21.
Established in 1981 by the unanimous United Nations resolution, the General Assembly declared a day devoted to “commemorating and strengthening the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples.”
Director General of UNESCO* Irina Bokova, sees this day as an important opportunity to raise awareness, especially among young people.
Ms. Bokova stated that “since wars begin in the minds of men and women, it is in the minds of men and women that the defenses of peace must be constructed.”
Questions for discussion:
- What does Ms. Bokova mean when she says, “wars begin in the minds of men and women?” Do you have any personal experiences you can share?
- What current events speak to the need for peace in our world?
- Have a discussion with your students, “what does peace mean to me?”
*UNESCO: United Nations Education, Scientific, and Cultural Organization was started after the two world wars to promote education, science, and culture among nations.
