New research confirms that vitamin D deficiency is common among kids. Previous research has shown that as many as 3 out of 4 kids in America are falling short of getting the recommended amounts of vitamin D and calcium from their diets–nutrients that – help build strong bones and may have other important health benefits. But how can you get more of these powerhouse nutrients into kids diets? Many researchers are finding that time in the sun alone isnt enough to help the body produce the amount of vitamin D kids need, and, as most parents know, kids are not likely to develop a sudden fondness for vitamin D-rich sardines. But dietitian Kathleen Zelman says breakfast can be part of the solution..
Following the lead of the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which doubled its vitamin D recommendations for all kids, a new Institute of Medicine committee is currently reviewing recent research to determine whether to raise the daily recommended intake (DRI) of vitamin D as well. Meanwhile, moms everywhere are looking for ways to fit more vitamin D and calcium into their kids diets. In this SMT, Kathleen Zelman will share simple, fast ideas that make it easy to help kids start every day with a nutritious, affordable and easy-to-prepare meal.
