1929! The stock market crash ushers in the Great Depression. People are desperate. What to do? Answer: repeal Prohibition; open Cocktail Lounges.
2008! Fiscal Meltdown. Desperation! The solution? Re-invent the cocktail; bring back the speakeasy. Cocktail Cabaret is a celebration (and investigation) in words and music of this phenomenon.
Songs by Duke Ellington, Cole Porter, Donald Ashwander, Billy Strayhorn, Steven Sondheim. Highbrows meet lowbrows at the Cocktail Cabaret: intrigue and danger with passionate strangers. Greenwich Village, smoke songs from Harlem. London’s literati and glitterati, erotic Boston, Hawaiian moonlight all play their part…linked to the current pulse of New York City.
Pablo Vela has created a series of memorable cabaret performances in New York City. The 11th Hour Lounge and Particular People (I&II) were presented in Manhattan, the latter at LaMaMa ETC. das MAX cabaret (inspired by the paintings of Max Beckmann) and WB Club WB (a tribute to film noir) were performed at the fabled BACA Downtown in Brooklyn. Lanny Harrison’s first professional gig was in the 1960’s, touring the U.S. with Solomon Yakim’s Pantomime Theater. Her latest one-woman show, ISBA, premiered on The Club’s prestigious stage in Nov. 2009. Ms Harrison has collaborated with, among others, the late Collin Walcott and with Steve Clorfeine with whom she performed Sense & Nonsense at the Duplex in the 1980’s. She has been a member of The House, Meredith Monk’s company, since 1969.
