BEACON, NY The sloop Clearwater, Americas environmental flagship, is getting an overhaul this winter. In order to continue winning the fight against those enemies of working wooden boatsrot, age, wear and tearHudson River Sloop Clearwater is undertaking an aggressive preservation project while hauled out in Saugerties that includes the opening of the sloops bow and replacement of a number of planks and frames.
Clearwater will be hosting an open house on Saturday, January 23 at 11 AM for media professionals and other guests to see the extent of the sloops ongoing renovations. Both of the sloops captains, Samantha Heyman and Nicholas Rogers, will talk about the work being done, and there will be remarks from others involved in the project.
The sloop preservation project is being funded by a substantial matching grant from the New York State Office of Parks and Historic Preservation, as well as by a federal appropriations grant that US Congressman Hinchey secured last year.
It should be noted that Clearwater received a number of bids and offers from boat repair specialists around the Mid-Atlantic and New England regions but chose to keep the job in the Hudson Valley.
