Having the Hard Conversation: Joe Dallas Coaches Believers on How They Can Tell the Truth to a World That’s Been Lied to
“The culture is embracing a new world vision, but we haven’t. So we’re charged with refusal to bend, and now, shocked and numbed by our recent arrest, we’re prepping for the trial. Are we ready?”
—Joe Dallas

www.joedallas.com
Eugene, Oregon (August 3, 2021) —In this internet-fueled era of fading morality, herd hostility, and swift retribution for every misstep, Christians share a common concern: When it comes to sensitive topics like abortion, homosexuality, and transgenderism, how can they defend a worldview that is seen as not only uncool, but unacceptable? This worry rears its head again and again, both in the public sphere, where Bible-believing individuals risk losing credibility, reputation, and even employment for refusing to deny God’s truth, and in the personal sphere, where Christians fear alienating loved ones who hold opposing views.
Author and counselor Joe Dallas knows how difficult it can be to stand up for what’s true when it’s easier and safer to keep quiet. But Joe has also been on the other side of the conversation, and his own life is a testament to how powerfully God’s Word can speak to a misguided soul seeking spiritual peace. A former member of the LGBTQ+ community, Joe spent years wrestling to reconcile the Christian faith with his same-sex attractions, only to have his desires redeemed when he finally embraced the Bible’s teachings as the God-given authority over his life.
His renouncement of his old identity and subsequent advocacy for a biblical view of sexuality is often met with anger and contempt: “Early on, I realized I wouldn’t be allowed to just minister to people who wanted to reject sexual sin,” Joe says. “I’d also have to articulate a defense for their decision, and mine as well, both as a counselor to them and an advocate for their choice.” Because he’s spent decades under scrutiny for his views, he understands how important it is that Christians be prepared to answer for their beliefs—not only to advocate for God’s truth in an antagonistic world, but to use that truth to minister to those who haven’t yet found it.
Joe’s new book Christians in a Cancel Culture addresses head-on how today’s believers can understand and defend the aspects of their faith that have now been deemed hateful and harmful. “This book was written in hopes of answering the ‘How do we stand?’ question when we as Christians are charged with homophobia, sexism, racism, transphobia, and judgmentalism,” Joe explains. “At some point, you’re likely to be accused of one or all of the above, and you’ll need to give an answer.” Joe tackles the pressing conversations around abortion, homosexuality, transgenderism, critical race theory, and progressive Christianity, taking a compassionate look at the arguments often made in support of them and then refuting these views with biblical truth.
Christians in a Cancel Culture also walks readers step by step through the difficult discussions they are likely to have with friends, family members, and colleagues who see Christian doctrines in a threatening light. Joe reveals how these conversations can be used by Christians as opportunities to show empathy, encouraging them to hear the other person’s beliefs, wounds, and struggles and, in return, demonstrating to them Christ’s profound love and mercy.
As he prepares for the publication of his book, Joe is also launching a weekly companion podcast of the same name with the goal of continuing to equip Christians to speak wisely on these difficult topics. His first episode will premier Friday, July 23. On the podcast, Joe will interview well-known apologists like Becket Cooke, Sean McDowell, and Alex McFarland, as well as other ministry leaders who will lend their expertise on the weekly subject matter. This relevant podcast will be a tremendous resource for Christians looking to stay attuned to the controversies of the world while learning what the Bible has to say about them.
Whether someone lacks the courage to speak up for what’s true, or whether they’re searching for compassion to balance their boldness, Joe encourages every Bible-believing Christian to know that these are conversations they can—and should—have with confidence and grace. Now more than ever, this confused world needs to hear the Bible’s truth. “However dark and confusing the times may be, I’m more convinced than ever that the Word of God is still the answer,” Joe says, “and that it remains exactly what it’s always claimed to be.”
Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary. It is observed during Holy Week as part of the Paschal Triduum on the Friday preceding Easter Sunday, and may coincide with the Jewish observance of Passover. It is also known as Holy Friday, Great Friday, Great and Holy Friday (also Holy and Great Friday), and Black Friday.[2][3][4]

Members of many Christian denominations, including the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Lutheran, Anglican, Methodist, Oriental Orthodox and Reformed traditions, observe Good Friday with fasting and church services.[5][6][7] Communicants of the Moravian Church have a Good Friday tradition of cleaning gravestones in Moravian cemeteries.[8]

The date of Good Friday varies from one year to the next on both the Gregorian and Julian calendars. Eastern and Western Christianity disagree over the computation of the date of Easter and therefore of Good Friday. Good Friday is a widely instituted legal holiday around the world, including in most Western countries and 12 U.S. states.[9] Some countries, such as Germany, have laws prohibiting certain acts, such as dancing and horse racing.

Easter,[nb 1] also called Pascha (Aramaic, Greek, Latin)[nb 2] or Resurrection Sunday,[5][6] is a Christian festival and holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day after his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD.[7][8] It is the culmination of the Passion of Jesus, preceded by Lent (or Great Lent), a 40-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.

Most Christians refer to the week before Easter as “Holy Week”, which contains the days of the Easter Triduum, including Maundy Thursday, commemorating the Maundy and Last Supper,[9][10] as well as Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus.[11] In Western Christianity, Eastertide, or the Easter Season, begins on Easter Sunday and lasts seven weeks, ending with the coming of the 50th day, Pentecost Sunday. In Eastern Christianity, the season of Pascha begins on Pascha and ends with the coming of the 40th day, the Feast of the Ascension.

Easter and the holidays that are related to it are moveable feasts which do not fall on a fixed date in the Gregorian or Julian calendars which follow only the cycle of the Sun; rather, its date is offset from the date of Passover and is therefore calculated based on a lunisolar calendar similar to the Hebrew calendar. The First Council of Nicaea (325) established two rules, independence of the Jewish calendar and worldwide uniformity, which were the only rules for Easter explicitly laid down by the council. No details for the computation were specified; these were worked out in practice, a process that took centuries and generated a number of controversies. It has come to be the first Sunday after the ecclesiastical full moon that occurs on or soonest after 21 March.[12] Even if calculated on the basis of the more accurate Gregorian calendar, the date of that full moon sometimes differs from that of the astronomical first full moon after the March equinox.[13]

Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover (Hebrew: פֶּסַח pesach, Aramaic: פָּסחָא pascha) by its origin (according to the Synoptic Gospels, both the Crucifixion and the Resurrection took place during the Jewish Passover)[14][15] and by much of its symbolism, as well as by its position in the calendar. In most European languages the feast is called by the words for passover in those languages; and in the older English versions of the Bible the term Easter was the term used to translate passover.[16] Easter customs vary across the Christian world, and include sunrise services, exclaiming the Paschal greeting, clipping the church,[17] and decorating Easter eggs (symbols of the empty tomb).[18][19][20] The Easter lily, a symbol of the resurrection,[21][22] traditionally decorates the chancel area of churches on this day and for the rest of Eastertide.[23] Additional customs that have become associated with Easter and are observed by both Christians and some non-Christians include egg hunting, the Easter Bunny, and Easter parades.[24][25][26] There are also various traditional Easter foods that vary regionally.

The Least of These is a powerful film releasing nationally on Feb. 1, 2019. Based on a true story and shot on location in India, The Least of These beautifully illustrates the power of love, hope and forgiveness to overcome hate and stars Stephen Baldwin (The Usual Suspects), Shari Rigby (October Baby), and Bollywood star Sharman Joshi (3 Idiots). The film shares the remarkable life of Australian missionary Graham Staines, who in 1999 met an unexpected fate in India while serving the leper population. The film’s release date coincides with the 20th anniversary of a tragic event that shocked the world.

As the social fabric of life in rural India disintegrates in the late 1990s, journalist Manav Banerjee (Sharman Joshi) moves with his pregnant wife to the town of Orissa in hope of a better life and the promise of a lucrative career. When speculation mounts that local Australian missionary Graham Staines (Stephen Baldwin) is illegally proselytizing leprosy patients, Manav agrees to investigate undercover for the newspaper.

What Manav finds is a series of revelations that are difficult to fathom and even harder to explain, forcing him to make a choice between his own ambition and the truth. In the end, his decision sparks both a tragic event and a surprising reaction from the Staines’ family that is felt around the world.

Based on a true story and shot on location in India, THE LEAST OF THESE beautifully illustrates the power of love, hope and forgiveness to overcome hate. Aneesh Daniel directs the film, featuring Stephen Baldwin, Shari Rigby, and Bollywood star Sharman Joshi with an original soundtrack including award-winning musical artists such as Michael W. Smith, Nicole C. Mullen and Toby Mac.

The Silk Road, actually not one road but a network of trade routes, from its birth before Christ, through its formal establishment during the Han Dynasty (206 B.C. E. to 220 C.E.), its height in the Tang Dynasty (618 C.E. to 907 C.E.), and its slow disappearance following the end of the Mongol Empire (1206 C.E. to 1368 C.E.), has played a unique role in trade, politics, religion, and culture, stretching far beyond the bounds of Asia itself. It has had a profound effect on the development of civilizations on both sides of the continent and its story is not over.

Buddhism became the first large-scale missionary movement in the history of world religion. Brought from India, it expanded with the establishment of monasteries along the Silk Road. These monasteries afforded merchants and travelers places to stay as they traversed from place to place. Other religions also spread along the trade route including Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Manichaeism, and Zoroastrianism.

China’s search for a breed of large, strong horses – replacing their pony-like horses – capable of carrying armor-clad men into battle was instrumental in the formal establishment of the Silk Road during the Han Dynasty. The success of the trade routes led to the necessity of policing it to thwart the bandits who came to plunder the caravans of goods traversing it. This was partially overcome by building forts and defensive walls, including sections of the Great Wall, along part of the route. Settlements were established as well though mostly in the oasis areas. By the time of the Tang Dynasty, which was known for its internal stability, the use of the horse had expanded beyond the military to that of commerce, entertainment, and sport, including polo, which though referred to as the “emperor of games” and the “sport of kings,” was played not only by royalty but by officials and the upper classes, by men and women alike. After the Tang Dynasty, the traffic on the road subsided as neighboring states again plundered the caravans.

The demise of the Silk Road owes much, too, to the development of the silk route by sea. It was becoming easier and safer to transport goods by water rather than overland. Ships had become stronger and more reliable, and the route passed promising new markets in Southern Asia. Storage jars made in China and Vietnam such as the sampling here of 8 of the 570 found on the wreck of the San Diego, a Spanish galleon converted to a cargo ship, contained preserved food, grain, and fresh water.

Such was the Silk Road and such is Bismuth’s painting of its history and culture.

The head of the Bodhisattva with her beautiful expression and the remaining fragment of her sumptuously ornamented diadem was found in the ruins of Longxingsi, “The Temple of the Dragon Awakening,” in the Shandong province. It is from the Northern Qi dynasty (550 C.E. to 577 C.E.).

The horse is made of terracotta and is from the Tang Dynasty. It was during this dynasty that China reached its apex.

Thus, united herein in Henry Bismuth’s Silk Road are unique segments of its history. While each of the images represents the then, together the whole they create renders an assemblage linking centuries and cultures into the present tense. This is what Bismuth intends. This is his goal. . . to revitalize, to transform, to make us go beyond our conventional thinking, to explore, to see. . . to “link world’s neighborhoods.”

Easter (Old English Ēostre),[nb 1] also called the Pasch[4] or Pascha (the two latter names derived, through Latin: Pascha and Greek Πάσχα Paskha, from Hebrew: פֶּסַח‎ Pesaḥ),[5][6] or Resurrection Sunday,[7][8] is a festival and holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred three days after his crucifixion by Romans at Calvary.[9][10] It is the culmination of the Passion of Christ, preceded by Lent, a forty-day period of fasting, prayer, and penance.

The last week of Lent is called Holy Week, and it contains the days of the Easter Triduum, including Maundy Thursday (also known as Holy Thursday), commemorating the Last Supper and its preceding foot washing,[11][12] as well as Good Friday, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus.[13] Easter is followed by a fifty-day period called Eastertide, or the Easter Season, ending with Pentecost Sunday.

Easter is a moveable feast, meaning it is not fixed in relation to the civil calendar. The First Council of Nicaea (325) established the date of Easter as the first Sunday after the full moon (the Paschal Full Moon) following the March equinox.[14] Ecclesiastically, the equinox is reckoned to be on 21 March (although the astronomical equinox occurs on 20 March in most years), and the “Full Moon” is not necessarily on the astronomically correct date. The date of Easter therefore varies from 22 March to 25 April inclusive. Eastern Christianity bases its calculations on the Julian calendar, whose 21 March corresponds, during the 21st century, to 3 April in the Gregorian calendar, and in which therefore the celebration of Easter varies between 4 April and 8 May.

Easter is linked to the Jewish Passover by much of its symbolism, as well as by its position in the calendar. In many languages, the words for “Easter” and “Passover” are identical or very similar.[15] Easter customs vary across the Christian world, and include sunrise services, exclaiming the Paschal greeting, clipping the church,[16] and decorating Easter eggs, a symbol of the empty tomb.[17][18][19] The Easter lily, a symbol of the resurrection,[20][21] traditionally decorates the chancel area of churches on this day and for the rest of Eastertide.[22] Additional customs that have become associated with Easter and are observed by both Christians and some non-Christians include egg hunting, the Easter Bunny, and Easter parades.[23][24][25] There are also various traditional Easter foods that vary regionally.

The feast commemorates Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem, an event mentioned in all four canonical Gospels.

In many Christian churches, Palm Sunday includes a procession of the assembled worshipers carrying palms, representing the palm branches the crowd scattered in front of Jesus as he rode into Jerusalem. The difficulty of procuring palms in unfavorable climates led to their substitution with branches of native trees, including box, yew, willow, and olive. The Sunday was often designated by the names of these trees, as in Yew Sunday, or by the general term Branch Sunday.

Eastern and Oriental Christianity

Palm Sunday, or the “Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem,” as it is often called in some Orthodox Churches, is one of the Twelve Great Feasts of the liturgical year. The day before Palm Sunday, Lazarus Saturday, believers often prepare palm fronds by knotting them into crosses in preparation for the procession on Sunday. The hangings and vestments in the church are changed to a festive color – gold in the Greek tradition and green in the Slavic tradition.

The Troparion of the Feast indicates the resurrection of Lazarus is a prefiguration of Jesus’ own Resurrection:

O Christ our God
When Thou didst raise Lazarus from the dead before Thy Passion,
Thou didst confirm the resurrection of the universe.
Wherefore, we like children,
carry the banner of triumph and victory,
and we cry to Thee, O Conqueror of love,
Hosanna in the highest!
Blessed is He that cometh
in the Name of the Lord.

In the Russian Orthodox Church, Ukrainian Orthodox Church, Ukrainian Catholic Church, Ruthenian Catholic Church, Polish, Bavarian and Austrian Roman Catholics, and various other Eastern European peoples, the custom developed of using pussy willow instead of palm fronds because the latter are not readily available that far north. There is no canonical requirement as to what kind of branches must be used, so some Orthodox believers use olive branches. Whatever the kind, these branches are blessed and distributed together with candles either during the All-Night Vigil on the Eve of the Feast (Saturday night), or before the Divine Liturgy on Sunday morning. The Great Entrance of the Divine Liturgy commemorates the “Entry of the Lord into Jerusalem”, so the meaningfulness of this moment is punctuated on Palm Sunday as everyone stands, holding their branches and lit candles. The faithful take these branches and candles home with them after the service, and keep them in their icon corner as an evloghia (blessing).

In Russia, donkey walk processions took place in different cities, but most importantly in Novgorod and, since 1558 until 1693, in Moscow. It was prominently featured in testimonies by foreign witnesses and mentioned in contemporary Western maps of the city. The Patriarch of Moscow, representing Christ, rode on a “donkey” (actually a horse draped in white cloth); the Tsar of Russia humbly led the procession on foot. Originally, Moscow processions began inside the Kremlin and terminated at Trinity Church, now known as Saint Basil’s Cathedral, but in 1658 Patriarch Nikon reversed the order of procession. Peter I, as a part of his nationalisation of the church, terminated the custom; it has been occasionally recreated in the 21st century.

In Oriental Orthodox churches, palm fronds are distributed at the front of the church at the sanctuary steps, in India the sanctuary itself having been strewn with marigolds, and the congregation proceeds through and outside the church.
Western Christianity

In ancient times, palm branches symbolized goodness and victory. They were often depicted on coins and important buildings. Solomon had palm branches carved into the walls and doors of the temple (1 Kings 6:29). Again at the end of the Bible, people from every nation raise palm branches to honor Jesus (Revelation 7:9).

Palm Sunday commemorates the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem (Matthew 21:1-9), when palm branches were placed in his path, before his arrest on Holy Thursday and his crucifixion on Good Friday. It thus marks the beginning of Holy Week, the final week of Lent.

In the Roman Catholic Church, as well as among many Anglican and Lutheran congregations, palm fronds (or in colder climates some kind of substitutes) are blessed with an aspergillum outside the church building (or in cold climates in the narthex when Easter falls early in the year). A solemn procession also takes place. It may include the normal liturgical procession of clergy and acolytes, the parish choir, or the entire congregation.

In the Catholic Church, this feast now coincides with that of Passion Sunday, which is the focus of the Mass which follows the service of the blessing of palms.
Blessing of palms outside an Episcopal Church in the United States.

The palms are saved in many churches to be burned the following year as the source of ashes used in Ash Wednesday services. The Catholic Church considers the blessed palms to be sacramentals. The vestments for the day are deep scarlet red, the color of blood, indicating the supreme redemptive sacrifice Christ was entering the city to fulfill: his Passion and Resurrection in Jerusalem.

In the Episcopal and many other Anglican churches and in Lutheran churches, as well, the day is nowadays officially called “The Sunday of the Passion: Palm Sunday”; in practice, though, it is usually termed “Palm Sunday” as in the 1928 American Book of Common Prayer and in earlier Lutheran liturgies and calendars, to avoid undue confusion with the penultimate Sunday of Lent in the traditional calendar, which was “Passion Sunday”.

In the Church of Pakistan (a member of the Anglican Communion) on Palm Sunday, the faithful carry palm branches into the church, as they sing Psalm 24.

In many Protestant churches, children are given palms, and then walk in procession around the inside of the church while the adults remain seated.

The true meaning of Christmas is love. John 3:16-17says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.” The true meaning of Christmas is the celebration of this incredible act of love.

The real Christmas story is the story of God’s becoming a human being in the Person of Jesus Christ. Why did God do such a thing? Because He loves us! Why was Christmas necessary? Because we needed a Savior! Why does God love us so much? Because He is love itself (1 John 4:8). Why do we celebrate Christmas each year? Out of gratitude for what God did for us, we remember His birth by giving each other gifts, worshipping Him, and being especially conscious of the poor and less fortunate.

The true meaning of Christmas is love. God loved His own and provided a way—the only Way—for us to spend eternity with Him. He gave His only Son to take our punishment for our sins. He paid the price in full, and we are free from condemnation when we accept that free gift of love. “But God demonstrated His own love for us in this: while we were still sinners, Christ died for us” (Romans 5:8).

From Wikipedia:

Christmas (Old English: Crīstesmæsse, meaning “Christ’s Mass”) is an annual commemoration of the birth of Jesus Christ and a widely observed cultural holiday, celebrated generally on December 25 by billions of people around the world. A feast central to the Christian liturgical year, it closes the Advent season and initiates the twelve days of Christmastide, which ends after the twelfth night. Christmas is a civil holiday in many of the world’s nations, is celebrated by an increasing number of non-Christians, and is an integral part of the Christmas and holiday season.

While the birth year of Jesus is estimated among modern historians to have been between 7 and 2 BC, the exact month and day of his birth are unknown. His birth is mentioned in two of the four canonical gospels. By the early-to-mid 4th century, the Western Christian Church had placed Christmas on December 25, a date later adopted in the East, although some churches celebrate on the December 25 of the older Julian calendar, which corresponds to January in the modern-day Gregorian calendar. The date of Christmas may have initially been chosen to correspond with the day exactly nine months after early Christians believed Jesus to have been conceived, or with one or more ancient polytheistic festivals that occurred near southern solstice (i.e., the Roman winter solstice); a further solar connection has been suggested because of a biblical verse identifying Jesus as the “Sun of righteousness”.
